Imagine my surprise this morning while drinking my coffee when suddenly my phone goes off. My blog was getting excessive amounts of traffic.

I finish my coffee and my phone goes off again…

Blurry eyed I open my control panel…

I see that I am getting hundreds more views than normal…all going to the @trent_reznor story. I figure Reznor must have tweeted something silly. Little did I know…

What IS Going Green, REALLY?

Know these statements?

“Go GREEN” … “Paperless” … “Reduce Your Carbon Footprint” … “Reduce Reuse Recycle“

I sure do. Where I live, we have more Hybrid/Electric cars that have these statements slapped across their bumpers and windows than you can shake a stick at. AS LONG AS you found that stick on the ground and are planning on using it in your composting heap!

I live in the center of the earth for technology, art, food and culture. The place where it all started. Silicon Valley California. Yep, we are very GREEN here.

Oddly enough, I live where we are not required to separate any of our trash. We have prisons full of people here that get that fun job. So I can rest, safely with the knowledge that, I do not have to do a menial task that other parts of the bay area and country are required too.

Makes me feel kind of  special.

So I am doing my part in being green, by well, not doing anything. The American Dream

I drive one of the most environmentally unfriendly vehicles there is. A Monster Jeep 4X4.

Why?

One of the really interesting facts about those hybrid/electric cars;

They like to drive in the fast lanes.

WHY? They barely get to 55 going up the hills and mountains around here. This phenomenon has boggled locals since these cars began showing up here.

So, WHY do I drive a lifted Monster Jeep? To annoy those driving these glorified scooters. Plain and simple. That and if our country is ever devastated (Think- Terminator), I will have no problems traveling around.

I am going to start looking around and dissecting some, “green” companies and seeing what they claim, “green” is.

Suggestions are greatly appreciated, and please do check back as I will begin looking into this…

UPDATE:

I want to do an experiment of sorts.

Of the companies that are claiming to be, “green” how much of their budget goes towards advertising on-line?

I have seen an increase of mailer advertising come to my house recently (ALL of them printed on recycled paper).  I checked on-line to see if any of these companies advertise there.

MOST of them do NOT.

WHY?!

Is it the cost?

Is it that they can not verify that a customer came to them because of an advertisement?

Are they just afraid of technology?

Anyone care to comment?

Twitter is filling up with SPAMMERS – Twitter Twouble

Twitter Manners and Spammers.

My follow Friday blog inspired this.

I have been on Twitter now for a month or so. In that time I have learned the basics, mostly, what NOT to do.

This brings me to a very interesting subject. People that follow you, only to have you follow them and then drop you as a follow. (Did that make sense)?

I am going to explain as well as create a list of violators of this;

@MarkIsMusing is my first SPAMMER that I want to expose. This user followed me. In Twitter fashion, I checked his page and saw he had quite a following. I went to his web-site, it looked like the guy had a well written page. I then followed him.

Now here is the rub, “he” sends me a direct message (that happens to go to my cell phone) at 12:31am! Now, this happens to be a night that I was actually asleep. I get up to find this message;

I reply to the guy with a flaming DM myself only moments later.

The next day, he stops following me and BLOCKS me.

Mark Kolke, you sir, are a SPAMMER!

That is one kind of spammer, here is the more common one.

Someone follows you, only to drop you as a follow after a day so. It appears as though they are more popular than they actually are.

LAME, I know. But annoying, because you may respond too something they write (and they usually write quite a lot), and guess what?

They never see it. They aren’t following you, but your followers will see it and possibly click on one of their links.

Wolfram Alpha bombs IMHO: delivers no results for me

I heard the hype. I saw the promo. I even began to buy into some of it.

I watched the launch and jumped on to the site to try my first search.

Errors were my first experience. That was to be expected.

What was not expected; the lack of unusable information the engine returned.

My opinion of the new Wolfram Alpha search engine?

This thing has the WORST user experience I have ever seen from any search site. It returns pictures rather than links.

If I were a college student, sure, this would be great!

I am not.

If I wanted to know how many people have my name or what the square root of 42956 is, this is the place to go. Other than that, USELESS. This is more of a widget than a search engine.

I would rather search for things, and actually find them!

Anybody that has read my blog in the past knows I have a soft spot for a new start-up search portal (leapfish.com).

Using the Wolfram Alpha, I did searches ranging from the basic to the extreme. I found I could not have even located a pizza parlor located in my country, THE U-S-A!

I know we have a pizza parlor or two. In fact, I have even been to one!

Wolfram, will the next version be useful to everyone?

Perhaps the next version will be useful?

Twitter is all aflutter!

Prop 8 overturned!

@latimes shot off a tweet that made the place go nuts!

Follow Friday or #FF is a, “special” occasion where tweeple can refer other tweeple they find interesting.

This is one hell of an interesting phenomenon to witness.

HUNDREDS nay THOUSANDS of tweets flash by as this is occurring. One only has to blink and their screen will be filled with new content.

Spammers seem to have a foothold of this event already and do massive attacks on users during this time.

Google changes with the times and allows trademarked adwords to be bid on

Google.

We all know the name, the site and how it works. They have been making minor tweaks over the last few months to make themselves more… Useful?

In an article by (BusinessWeek) I read that the GIANT of search is about to allow trademarked key phrases to be bid on by ANYONE.

What exactly does this mean?

If I own an electronics company and I want to have, “Best Buy” as my key phrase. I CAN!

Exposure is the key here folks. As long as the ads are not misleading, this is a GREAT opportunity for American Business to climb out of the hole it is in and make some money!

Other platforms like this exist already. (LeapFish) does something very similar. Limiting the amount of people that can actually get any set of words too 3. In other words, you only ever have 2 other competitors, unless you buy all three spots.

Mashable did a write up about them. If you look at the ads in the screen shot, you will find 3 ads there.

Twitter had a scheduled maintenance today.

But did they break it?

Tweets are failing and people are concerned.

Not original, and I don’t care, it’s late.

Twitter is an up and coming social utility.

As for me? I think it has its place in life.

Something happened tonight, that prompted me to blog.

“Twitter-celebs” and their use of power.

What would happen if we allowed someone the power to instantly send a message to 200,000 internet savvy users that could be construed however they saw fit to read it?

Now, I can show you MANY cases where this would be no big deal. This did not just appear on his twitter. The RSS feed has it on the NIN un-official BLOG!

This, seriously is not good...

HOWEVER, Reznor someone with a LOT of followers (465,232 Followers ) and seriously may have put this girl at risk.

Yes, I am a follower of his. Yes, I am a NIN fan.  NO this is not acceptable behavior for a celebrity. Even one I like.

What did she write?

Trent, I love your music. You tweet some funny things! But that was just not a good move. You just got passed that iPhone thing.Were you drunk tweeting?

UPDATE: I did grab a screen-shot of the unofficial blog, which ranked higher in my search for, “nin blog” than the official blog. I do appoligise for my confusion.

UPDATE: @trent_reznor seems to have a solid fan base. I have received some interesting emails from them. TY for taking the time to track down my actual email address.

I have not checked into the validity of the address, but it makes one think, is this really what twitter was meant for?

UPDATE:

The account in question WAS indeed suspended. I can only guess that Twitters reason would be Privacy Infringement. If that were the case, why hasn’t Trent_Reznor had his account suspended? It does make one wonder. I guess that Twitter figures this will just go away.  Will it?

NOW, that is certainly a HUGE increase. I call shenanigans Mr. Reznor.

NOT 2 minutes after posting this, his follower number went back to his, ” normal” amount. Is Twitter to blame or is Trent able to manipulate Twitter at his whim?

News reporters and SEO masters

I wrote a (very) short story about bartering and where it has a place in our new found economic situation.

This was apparently sent directly to a local news reporter. I received a reply from him within hours asking to interview me. I was a bit skeptical as I did not know who this guy was. I am in the < 1% of Americans that do not own a tv. I had to do some research before responding to his email.

During my research online about the reporter a, “tweet” comes through from a personal inspiration of mine Robert Scoble. Since I do work in the industry, and only live half an hour away, I apply for the, “job.” What I did not know is who all would be in attendance at the function I was going to attend (more on that later).

I get the job, set up a schedule and continue my research.

I reply to the reporter and let him know that I was actually planning on hitting a bucket of balls the next day if he is interested, he could join me at the local driving range.

I then begin doing research on the guy I will be driving, and the function.

THIS IS WHERE IT GETS SQUIRRELY!

This guy, is HUGE in his industry. I mean like, Henry Ford huge. When people think of American made cars, they think Ford. When people think SEO (in the industry of course) they think this guy! Great. I am doomed. I work for a start-up company that has been growing exponentially and has unique everything and I am going to meet this guy, this guru. This guy is going to hate me!

To make matters worse, I get to go to a place, where EVERYONE is high caliber internet marketing masters.

I… sell… key phrases. Granted, we have a totally revolutionary search portal, and a completely unique marketing model. At the end of the day, I sell keywords.

As prepped as I can be, I get to bed that night and wake up ready for a busy day.

My interview with Mr. Finney goes off without a hitch. He informs me that the interview will appear at 6pm on Wednesday the 13th on channel 7. Great, I now have to see if I can get someone to, “tape” it. I will post that video here when it hits the net. I am kind of excited by this.

I get to the conference location in San Jose in record time.

I walk around this conference meeting some of the most amazing people EVER!

We head over to the Microsoft campus for the other conference. We came in to the conference at a point where the developers were talking about robot and spider exposure. Very interesting stuff. I even learned some things to bring back to our company.

I will need to do some more research into everything I learned, and will post that if anyone is interested?

Very cool things happening in technology!

I was honored to be among that crowd.
